Janelle Gray's Play Gives a Voice to New Generation

High school students have a lot to say, and they want to be heard. That’s what local playwright Janelle Gray learned when she talked to high school students while developing her play, #voiced.
“What I did find was an immense amount of passion for these subjects. It was just this moment where they were like ’Oh, you want to know what I think?’” Gray said. “There were students that were sitting there that were saying, ‘No, these are things that I struggle with and I kind of bottle it up because when I get home, my parents are so busy saying things at the T.V., I don’t really have a moment to jump in or ask questions.’”

I am so privileged to have a good friend in Janelle Gray, a creative powerhouse, and it was an easy choice to make her my first spotlight! What project are you currently working on?
Because it's submission time, I'm working on quite a few. Rage, a stage play; two teleplays Dub City and Consort; a short film, Uprising; and a feature, Kin. Depending on what day of the week it is, I'm editing all of them. <see more>

Today we’d like to introduce you to Janelle Gray.

I’ve been a writer since I was 11. I always knew that communication and storytelling was my comfort zone. I received a Bachelor of Arts in Communications with a focus in Journalism and Spanish from Stephen F. Austin State University. I’m Janelle Gray. I’m a creative with a tendency to write through a social justice/human rights lens. I tell stories via novels, short stories, short films, and plays.
What is/are the real-life story(ies) behind your book(s)?
My personal experiences are what have sparked my published works.
